PNNL performs many research projects those require analytical activities producing large amount of hierarchically structured data.
Thus, there was the need for a solution that would allow displaying the data in intuitively understandable form providing an ability to browse the levels of hierarchy in order to improve analysis process and give analysts a flexible way to visualize research results.
Inteks developed Java/Swing application implementing an original graphical data presentation algorithm. The application allowed extracting original analysis data from Microsoft Excel/Access and converting to XML format understandable by visualization tool. The application user interface is implemented according to sec 508 UI guidelines.
Other part os solution was a Win32 application for extracting original analysis data from Microsoft Excel/Access and converting to XML format understandable by visualization tool.
To add ability for quick "what-if" analysis Inteks created plug-ins for Excel and Access those allowed launching visualization application from there and updating visualization on-the-fly after user data were updated in Access/Excel.
The solution allowed to facilitate decision making process and decreased the time required for obtaining graphical presentation, used to perform analysis and demonstrate the research results. Solution is being widely used in PNNL and supported by the development team for 3 years. Last enhancements made to the product improved users' ability to perform "what-if" analysis.
